William Smith Bryan
William Smith Bryan (1846-1940) is an American author well known to many Missouri historians & genealogists due to his publication of the book, "Pioneer Families of Missouri". He also published several other books related to history as well.
He was born to Elijah Bryan and Lydia Ann McClenny in Warren County, Missouri. He was the grandson of Jonathan Bryan and Mary Hughes. William was educated at home by two sisters who were both teachers and he later ended up graduating from Stewarts Commercial College in St. Louis. He later married Nancy Mildred North on 25 November 1875 in Franklin County, Missouri.
In 1865 William went to Council Grove, Kansas where he learned to set type. The next year he established the St. Charles (Mo) News. His journalistic career was wide and varied. In 1880 he established the Historical Publishing Company of St. Louis which later had branches in several large cities. He died aged 94 on 13 Jul 1940 in Nevada, Vernon County, Missouri, USA. He is currently buried at Broderick-North Cemetery, Gray Summit, Franklin County, Missouri, USA.
