Willem Jacobszoon Hofdijk
Willem Jacobszoon Hofdijk (often abbreviated as WJ Hofdijk) was a Dutch Romantic writer and historian. He was born on June 27, 1816 in Alkmaar. His favorite genre is the historical novel, of which Ons Voorgeslacht remains his most important work. Willem Hofdijk (he himself will add Jacobszoon as a tribute to his father Jacob) was born in 1816 to a modest family.
His father, a silversmith , dies when Willem is one year old. His mother remarried afterwards with a man named Samuel Sieuwerts, also a goldsmith. At the age of 16, young Willem Hofdijk learned goldsmithing with his father-in-law. However, he quickly shows the desire to continue school beyond elementary school, which is a financial sacrifice for the family.
His interest in the Middle Ages is already noticeable in his early years: in his adolescence, he formed a "Knights Club" with his friends. Hofdijk and his comrades are very interested in the writings of Jacob van Lennep , the author of the first historical novels in Dutch. His mother died of tuberculosis when he is twenty years old.
He died on August 29, 1888 in Arnhem.
