Charles Samuel Stewart (1795 in Flemington, New Jersey, - 1870) was an American missionary on the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii). He studied law and theology at Princeton. On his South Sea trip during the years 1929 and 1830 as Chaplain in the US Navy, he wrote a two-volume travelogue (A Visit To The South Seas). The travel report includes a description of the surfing by the locals, as well as a relatively detailed description of the surfboards used for it.
