Views of Simla
First edition of this scarce collection of views of Simla, the summer capital of British India, with lithographed title page, map and 24 lovely tinted lithographs of this region in the northwest Himalayas. This series of views made in and around the town of Simla (modern-day Shimla), the summer capital of the British Raj, was a private commission from the publisher Dickinson & Co. The artist, Captain George Powell Thomas, was in the 64th Regiment Bengal Infantry.
With accompanying 11-page text, "A Brief Alphabetical Account of the Inhabitants, Customs and Productions of the Himalayas," and two-page Description of the Plates. A very few copies were also issued with the plates hand-colored.
Tall folio (15 x 22 inches), period style three-quarter crimson morocco with original cloth-gilt title label affixed to front cover, plates laid in loose.
