Elisha Kent Kane was a famous Arctic explorer. He graduated in the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania in 1842, and entered the United States navy as a surgeon in the following year. He commenced his career as an Arctic explorer in 1850 by accompanying the Grinnell expedition in search of the lost British explorer Sir John Franklin.
Although ultimately unsuccessful in finding Franklin, this expedition made scientific observations of their surroundings and paved the way for future explorations in the Arctic by the United States.
