Van Lennep worked as a missionary among the Armenians from 1840 to 1861, for much of that time in Tokat, the home of many rich Armenians, and his work is particularly interesting for illustrations of Armenian life and costume in the Ottoman Empire.
First edition. Folio. Lithographed title and 20 colored lithographed plates, original brown pebble cloth, gilt embossed vignette to upper board of book title, a woman seated on a camel, shaded by a palm tree, a crescent and star in the sky.
