[Volume 2] Explorations in the interior of the Labrador peninsula : the country of the Montagnais and Nasquapee Indians
Henry Youle Hind was an English geologist and explorer who was appointed by the Canadian government to conduct a survey of the Labrador Peninsula in 1861. Hind and the expedition traveled around the Bay of Seven Islands on the north shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence then overland by the Moisie River to Hamilton Inlet on the Labrador Coast.
The vivid chromolithographs were made after drawings by Hind's brother Henry, who traveled from England to accompany the expedition. Overall the expedition was not of much scientific value but Hind reports on matters related to ethnology and other natural surroundings that are very important. According to Field;
"All that Mr. Hind undertakes, is done so thoroughly that little more could be indicated, to complete the exhaustion of his subject. [His] volumes are almost entirely occupied with incidents of Indian life and character, particularly of the Montagnais, Abenakis, and Esquimaux Indians"
