A Voyage up the Mediterranean in His Majesty's Ship the Swiftsure : one of the squadron under the command of Rear-Admiral Sir Horatio Nelson, K.B. now Viscount and Baron of the Nile, and Duke of Bronte in Sicily; with a description of the battle of the Nile on the first of August 1798, and a detail of events that occurred subsequent to the battle in various parts of the Mediterranean / by Cooper Williams

Date: 1802

Beginning on 24 May 1798, Rev. Cooper Willyams served as chaplain to Lord St. Vincent on his Majesty's ship the Swiftsure in Nelson's squadron in the Mediterranean. His eye-witness account, including of the Battle of the Nile, was published two years after his return to England, and was accompanied by numerous plates engraved from his own drawings.

His journals and drawings of the expeditions in which he took part are intelligent and useful. For example, Willyms was present in this vessel at the battle of the Nile, and his narrative, which was full of engravings from his own drawings, of A Voyage up the Mediterranean, contained 'the first, the most particular, the most authentic account of the battle'. The text is lively in style, and touches on everything one might find interesting; history, military, theology, modern manners and customs etc

Most of the illustrations were done by aquatint engraver Joseph Stadler who produced illustrations for 31 books, including Thrornton's Temple Flora (1807) and worked for both Ackermann and Boydell. Many of his plates are "among the finest ever executed" and "much appreciated in their time" (Prideaux, 12, 369). The assorted views depict land, cityscapes and inhabitants throughout the Mediterranean region, including Cairo, Bologna, Venice, Alexandria, Rhodes and others. Other views include Caiffe, Mount Carmel, Syracuse, Lago, Minorca, Gibraltar, Mount Pelegrino, and the Rock of Scylla.

First edition, one of only 100 large-paper copies with frontispiece, dedication leaf, double-page map with insets, single-page map, and 39 aquatint plates, all hand-colored.

[1], xxiii, [1] 309 p., 43 leaves of plates, (1 folded) : col. ill., map (folded), plan ; 30 cm.
